Why Fall Is the Best Time to Build Your Retinol Routine

Hello Beautiful,

If retinol has been on your list for months, and summer never felt like the right time to start, October is.

Retinol increases your skin's sensitivity to the sun, which makes summer a harder season to build a new habit around, especially with pool days and long hours outdoors. Now that UV intensity has dropped and your days are less exposed, your skin has room to adjust without that competing stress.

Why timing matters with retinol

Retinol speeds up cell turnover and signals your skin to build more collagen. Both processes leave newer skin slightly more vulnerable to UV while it adjusts, usually across the first two to three months of consistent use.

Starting in October puts that adjustment period in the lower UV months rather than peak summer. Your skin gets the collagen support without intense daytime sun working against it at the same time.

This is not a rule saying retinol is off limits in summer. It means fall removes one variable, and one variable removed makes consistency easier to hold.

How to begin

If you are new to it, start low and start slow. Once or twice a week, at night, after your moisturizer or buffered with it. Give your skin two to three months before you increase anything.

If you already use it, fall and winter are a reasonable window to add a night, since your skin is not carrying the UV load it was in July.

SPF the next morning, always. Retinol's sun sensitivity does not pause because the UV index dropped. It matters less than it did in June, not not at all.

Pair it with a ceramide moisturizer. Retinol can be drying, and a compromised barrier undercuts everything you are working toward. Support the barrier while you build the habit, not after the irritation shows up.

Building firmness is not about adding more. It is about choosing the right ingredient for the right season, and then giving it the time it needs.
